I’m an optimistic person by nature. I still have hope that some day there will be a way for us to have unconditional love for one another. I am grateful. I am grateful for all the freedoms I have and never forget the fact that these freedoms are not available to all. If my freedom was taken away or given limits, would I remain this optimistic? Probably not, so all I can do is educate and create awareness for those who don’t have these freedoms. I do not have the struggles of a transgendered person or anything of the sort. I am simply a woman who wants to help all transgender, transvestite, intersex and anyone else I can. My goal is to give everyone an equal voice so we can finally listen and understand. I will educate, voice, and shed light on those who are lacking the powerful soothing feeling of freedom.
We pride ourselves as counterparts in humanity on our values, our beliefs, our gender, the whole that comprises us as individuals. What you identify yourself as; male, female, transgender, transvestite, cross-dresser, intersex; there are so many more categories that determine how we are treated in this society. There are far too many instances of people choosing their gender, their rightful identification and being denied this right. It’s a concept that people don’t think about, having a choice in our gender. We are all born a certain sex, male or female, but gender is masculine and feminine.
I met a person the other day who has chosen to live as a woman although she was born a male. She shared some of her troubles with me. Every time she had to fill out an application, a legal document, any paper that required that box to be checked; she marked female. Female, as defined in the Merriam Webster Dictionary, is relating to, or being the sex that bears young or produces eggs. Well there it is, simple. If you can “produce eggs”, you are a female. Is it really that simple? That narrow definition should not suffice. There is far too much grey in the picture. If a woman loses her ability to have children or produce eggs due to medical reasons, is she no longer considered “female”?
Now that the wheels are spinning and the gears are running…now that you are really thinking what it takes to be considered a woman. Take a moment to think about how much of your identity is determined by your sex. How difficult would it be to switch? What if all your life you never identified with people in your same sex group and all you knew is that you never cared about what to wear, or how popular you could be, but instead how to be who you always knew you were in your heart.
Thanks to LOGO television, Gay & Lesbian books, and organizations such as GLADD; there are finally ways to educate people, give hope to those who are not yet “out”. I hope to move us forward to great heights where we will be able to have a harmonious place to Peace Together.
